Details have emerged about President Trump and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’s educational budget—and it looks like a bleak future for children’s education.
First, they are planning on cutting $9.2 billion from the department’s funding, and reduce federal education expenditures by $10.6 billion.
But the worse news is how DeVos plans to budget $400 million for “school choice” vouchers, and another $1 billion “to push public schools to adopt choice-friendly policies.” So far, the only federally funded school choice voucher program is in Washing D.C.
The Department of Education, however, found that the students in those charter schools were testing lower than children attending public schools. But it’s not just that the system doesn’t work, it’s also born out of—and still promotes—racist ideologies.
School choice was designed as a loophole in the desegregated South, allowing white parents to send their kids to whites-only academies. This also led to governors closing schools, and black children left without any educational prospects.
Now, it favors both class and race, “allowing affluent white families to use taxpayer dollars to send their children to private religious schools with questionable approaches to scientific education.” School choice will only benefit the wealthy and strip underprivileged schools of much-needed funding.
Devos once said that her “desire is to confront the culture in ways that will continue to advance God’s kingdom.” She and her husband lamented that “the church has been displaced by the public school as the center for activity.” If God’s Kingdom includes an entire generation of poorly-educated Americans, she’s doing a great job.
